LEED® - New Construction (NC) & Commercial Interior (CI)Wend-Wood LEED OptionsWend-Wood, Inc. has manufactured products for projects pursuing LEED® certification as well as projects that simply wish to maintain LEED® principles without certification. Alternative materials such as Biofiber™ Wheatboard and Dakota Burl™ have found their way into several projects completed by Wend-Wood, Inc. Glues and adhesives that are LEED® NC/CI EQ 4.4 compatible and Green Guard Certified glues are common place in our manufacturing process, not just for products looking for FSC or LEED® certification. This table highlights LEED® credits that Wend-Wood, Inc. can fabricate products to contribute to.
LEED® Credit MR 4.1 & MR 4.2 Recycled ContentMany of the panel products that are suitable for fabricating cabinetry and counters for LEED® projects can contribute towards these credits. In some cases 100% of the wood fiber of the product is recycled wood content. For projects that are going for these credits rather then MR 7 Certified Wood Credits, Wend-Wood can provide much of its products with recycled content. However, we strongly recommend our customers who are pursing LEED® certification to look at a millwork strategy for MR 7. LEED® Credit MR 5.1 & MR 5.2 Regional MaterialsIt is hard for wood based products in our region to qualify for these credits, as much of the wood materials being produced that would be suitable for LEED projects are not manufactured or harvested in our area. Although the phrase “never say never” comes to mind, the reality is an uphill battle from a cabinet/millwork standpoint at this time. We hope that as demand increases for environmentally responsible wood products that regional wood and board products that are harvested and produced locally become available. Because these credits are harder to get in our area, we strongly suggest that our customers look at their non-wood materials to pursue this credit and look to any other credit they could possibly get such as MR 7 for their wood materials and products. LEED® Credit MR 6 Rapidly Renewable MaterialsRapidly renewable materials, such as wheat and bamboo products and other materials that are typically non-wood based can help attain the MR 6 credit. For those looking for rapidly renewable materials in their cabinets, counters and/or millwork, Biofiber Wheatboard, Dakota Burl and FSC™ PlyBoo Plywood materials can make attractive and unique products for any environment. We recently completed cabinets and millwork for the Greensburg Incubator Building in Greensburg, Kansas that were constructed from Biofiber Wheatboard with a clear finish. These products have a rich golden tone that is very close to the color of a golden Kansas wheat field. LEED® Credit MR 7.0 Certified WoodFSC Certified products have been around for many years. Today there are many choices of FSC CoC certified wood and board products such as FSC™ Skyblend, FSC™ SkyPly, FSC Certified Woods, Board Products and Veneers. These products are virtually indistinguishable from their non-FSC counterparts as well as their Non LEED® compliant cousins. An FSC CoC certified particleboard such as FSC™ Skyblend is nearly identical in every way to traditional particleboard. Where it shines, though, is in its FSC CoC pedigree and its LEED® compliance. We encourage our customers to read the rainforest alliance’s “Leed MR7 – FSC Credit Made Easy” to learn more about how a Millwork/Cabinet Strategy can be a significant contributor to MR7 credits. LEED® Credit EQ 4.4 Low-Emitting Materials: Composite Wood & Agrifiber Products.Board products suitable for LEED® contributing products such as the SkyBlend and SkyPly line of products all contribute to this credit. Wend-Wood, Inc. has over the past several years worked to identify and document that all of our adhesives and glues were produced with No Added Urea-Formaldehyde. This allows any of our FSC CoC certified products or other LEED® compliant products to contribute to this credit. For those pursuing this credit, we encourage them to also take a look at the MR 7 credit, as many of the board products with No Added Urea-Formaldehyde Resins also are available in an FSC CoC version. For only a modest increase in cost, Wend-Wood, Inc. can produce cabinets that would contribute to both this credit as well as the MR 7 credit. LEED® Resources
